Mucositis - an overview

Mouth sores or more severe, oral mucositis is an inflammation of the oral mucous membrane. It develops as a side effect of a cancer treatment with chemotherapy and with irradiation. The severity of the mucositis is a consequence of the type of cancer therapy and degree of oral hygiene. Infections, pain and mouth ulcers can be the result which makes food intake more difficult and painful. The quality of life is diminished; chances of cure will be reduced.
