Mucositis - the consequences
The consequences of a mucositis can be substantial for the patient. Those are first problems, which refer to the nutrition, like pain when eating and drinking. The consequences can become still more serious however for the patient. Infections can be a consequence, first locally on the mouth mucous membrane then become systemic and life-threatening. This may result in longer hospitalization stays with and increased emergency department visits, further a reduction of the planned chemotherapy dose or an interruption of the therapy which for the patient is disadvantageous up to increased medical costs.
